Learning Outcome

1.  Appraise and demonstrate a breadth of knowledge relating to contemporary drawing practice.

I was given assignments that challenged me to improve myself. One is life drawing session. I have learnt to concentrate in every little details of a model and focus on shape, shading and the structure of human. I think I can apply this practicing to design my human characters. I have more confident when I draw human fugures. Here is an example piece of my life-drawing work with the model.

Another assignment is to redesign a DC comic superhero, OMAC. I got an idea to draw him as a women. She lives in slum area and try to revenge her enemy. 


As my first OMAC draft, my OMAC's weak point are lack of the character's attitude and also the ability to show realistic human anatomy. I had to think about her story and personality and show them on my drawing to let the audience know.  I try to draw her eyes to show how bitterness of this women's life but somehow she has plans to revenge whoever tortued her before. Then, I tried to use photo reference in my final piece. This techniques improve the anatomy of my drawing. I think the drawing work well in the color and costume. Tan skin let the audience know that she lives in hot weather area, it maybe middle east. Her costume shows not only sex appeal, but also a clue that she has been tortued as a sex object before she got OMAC power.


Moreover, I got a chance to draw an environment in realistic style. I underrstand that I need to do research about perspective drawing becuase my drawing is not convincing enough, but I got a good feedback in term of mood of the picture. However, to imporve my realistic drawing and painting ablility, I need to learn a lot about perspective drawing and digital painting.

 

2.  Identify resources and demonstrate a comprehensive understanding of techniques required for a range of drawing task.

Through this module I have used and experimented with various medias including digital, traditional, pencil and so on.

3.  Evaluate historical and contemporary practice in drawing.

This Da Vinci's drawings show me his skill on convincing human anatomy. That is important to concept art for game because I noticed that most game tend to emphasise realistic images. That's the point to draw concept art for game realistic based on a convincing human anatomy. Most genre of games is action. To make an action scene looks convincing, the game makers need the make the audiences believe in their creation world. Therefore, the characters need to look and move realistic.



This drawing is Matt Nolte's concept art for animaiton, Brave(2012). His human figure looks more stylish than Da Vinci's. He drew the character's hands too small rather than bigger. Animation or cartoon have young audiences as major market. To make characters look outstanding by stylish drawing is the way making audiences remember characters easiers. That is why doing concept art for animation, the artists tend to stylise their human drawing.

4.  Synthesis observation, existing and acquired knowledge in the production of original imagery.

The Victorian doctor's bag task let me use my observation on existing things. For example, my doctor bag, I drew in gray color as same as the original image as I can, then apply the color and texture of metal and leather to it.


5.  Analysis and interpret visual situations in order to represent them effectively.

Before I took this course, I never have a chance in any life drawing class. I rather practicing draw from references. This course gave me opportunity to practice on both things.

At the beginning of term, I considered myself as a low level drawing ability. My human drawing had many mistake from accuarate human anatomy. Sometime, the head was bigger, sometime the legs are too long. By the number of life drawing classes, I graudually developed my ability of transcribing and recording human model in front of me. I learnt about the human anatomy's ratio.

And also a doctor bag assignment, I learnt to look at the reference photos in every little detail as well as the angle and textures.

I feel I have improved somehow. I have more little confidence in my drawing than the begining of the term.

8.  Apply professional techniques to a range of commercial problems

OMAC redesign can be my commercial problems in term of design a character for realistic film. The first stage, my drawing of OMAC is looks too cartoon and human anatomy is wrong.
Then I use a photo refernces to make it look realistic especially the human anatomy of my drawing.





Another commercial problems of mine is draw an imagination creature. I need to have more creativity of my imagination.




And to drawing props for film, I need to make it looks realistic as possible as I can.
